How to help others?

Try to offer first

When people need your help, they'll most likely ask you first, but if you have the chance, try to offer to help before they ask you. This will show that you were willing to help from the start. For example, if you see a friend struggling to carry groceries, offer to help. Or if you see them getting bullied, help stand up. Or if you see them getting pushed down or beaten, ask "Are you all right?" and help them up. Then try to cheer them up. Believe me, helping people will always make you feel better because it's the right thing to do.

Put yourself in another person's shoes

Being compassionate can give you a strong reason to help someone else. It can also show people that you really do care about someone.

Volunteer or donate

Being in charitable organizations is a great way to help the less fortunate, like donating food or money to the poor.

Listen

You obviously can't know what you need to do if you're not even paying attention. Plus, people aren't going to rely on you very much if you act like you don't even care what they're saying.

Think about what might happen if you don't

More people will feel more miserable if you just leave them when they need you, and you don't want to see people unhappy, do you? Don't stress yourself too much, but it's always nice to lend a hand.

Observe

Find out what that certain person might like. For example: s/he is always folding up paper. You can buy a origami set and teach him/her your tricks. Or he/she seems bored a lot. Try spending time with them to play a board game or play cards.

The power of "ONE" from common man

A little over 30 years ago, a teenager named Jadav “Molai” Payeng began burying seeds along a barren sandbar near his birthplace in northern India’s Assam region to grow a refuge for wildlife. Not long after, he decided to dedicate his life to this endeavor, so he moved to the site where he could work full-time creating a lush new forest ecosystem. Incredibly, the spot today hosts a sprawling 1,360 acre of jungle that Payeng planted single-handedly.

It all started way back in 1979 when floods washed a large number of snakes ashore on the sandbar. One day, after the waters had receded, Payeng , only 16 then, found the place dotted with the dead reptiles. That was the turning point of his life.

“The snakes died in the heat, without any tree cover. I sat down and wept over their lifeless forms. It was carnage. I alerted the forest department and asked them if they could grow trees there. They said nothing would grow there. Instead, they asked me to try growing bamboo. It was painful, but I did it. There was nobody to help me. Nobody was interested,” says Payeng, now 47.

While it’s taken years for Payeng’s remarkable dedication to planting to receive some well-deserved recognition internationally, it didn’t take long for wildlife in the region to benefit from the manufactured forest. Demonstrating a keen understanding of ecological balance, Payeng even transplanted ants to his burgeoning ecosystem to bolster its natural harmony. Soon the shadeless sandbar was transformed into a self-functioning environment where a menagerie of creatures could dwell. The forest, called the Molai woods, now serves as a safe haven for numerous birds, deers, rhinos, tigers, and elephants — species increasingly at risk from habitat loss elsewhere.

Despite the conspicuousness of Payeng’s project, Forestry officials in the region first learned of this new forest in 2008 — and since then they’ve come to recognize his efforts as truly remarkable, but perhaps not enough.

“We’re amazed at Payeng,” says Assistant Conservator of Forests, Gunin Saikia. “He has been at it for 30 years. Had he been in any other country, he would have been made a hero.”

Story of Appreciation

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company.

He passed the first interview, the director did the last interview, made the last decision.

The director discovered from the CV that the youth's academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research,
Never had a year when he did not score.

The director asked,
"Did you obtain any scholarships in school?"
The youth answered "none".

The director asked,
" Was it your father who paid for your school fees?"
The youth answered,
"My father passed away when I was one year old, it was my mother who paid for my school fees.

The director asked,
" Where did your mother work?"
The youth answered,
"My mother worked as clothes cleaner.
The director requested the youth to show his hands.
The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.

The director asked,
" Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?"
The youth answered,
"Never, my mother always wanted me to study and read more books.
Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.

The director said,
"I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mother's hands, and then see me tomorrow morning.*

The youth felt that his chance of landing the job was high. When he went back, he happily requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange, happy but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to the kid.

The youth cleaned his mother's hands slowly. His tear fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother's hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when they were cleaned with water.

This was the first time the youth realized that it was this pair of hands that washed the clothes everyday to enable him to pay the school fee. The bruises in the mother's hands were the price that the mother had to pay for his graduation, academic excellence and his future.

After finishing the cleaning of his mother's hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother.

That night, mother and son talked for a very long time.

Next morning, the youth went to the director's office.

The Director noticed the tears in the youth's eyes, asked:
" Can you tell me what have you done and learned yesterday in your house?"

The youth answered,
" I cleaned my mother's hand, and also finished cleaning all the remaining clothes'

The Director asked,
" please tell me your feelings."

The youth said,
1. I know now what is appreciation. Without my mother, there would not the successful me today.
2. By working together and helping my mother, only I now realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done.
3. I have come to appreciate the importance and value of family relationship.

The director said,
" This is what I am looking for to be my manager. I want to recruit a person who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the sufferings of others to get things done, and a person who would not put money as his only goal in life. You are hired.

Later on, this young person worked very hard, and received the respect of his subordinates. Every employee worked diligently and as a team. The company's performance improved tremendously.

A child, who has been protected and habitually given whatever he wanted, would develop "entitlement mentality"and would always put himself first. He would be ignorant of his parent's efforts.
When he starts work, he assumes that every person must listen to him, and when he becomes a manager, he would never know the sufferings of his employees and would always blame others.
For this kind of people, who may be good academically, may be successful for a while, but eventually would not feel sense of achievement.
He will grumble and be full of hatred and fight for more. If we are this kind of protective parents, are we really showing love or are we destroying the kid instead?*

You can let your kid live in a big house, give him a Driver & Car for going around, Eat a Good Meal, learn Piano, Watch a Big Screen TV. But when you are Cutting Grass, please let them experience it. After a Meal, let them Wash their Plates and Bowls together with their Brothers and Sisters. Tell them to Travel in Public Bus, It is not because you do not have Money for Car or to Hire a Maid, but it is because you want to Love them in a right way. You want them to understand, no matter how rich their parents are, one day their hair will Grow Grey, same as the Mother of that young person. The most important thing is your kid learns how to appreciate the effort and experience the difficulty and learns the ability to work with others to get things done..

Wind or Sun – Who Wins?

Wind or Sun – Who Wins?
The North Wind bragged of mighty strength. The Sun interrupted that there was great strength in gentleness.

“Let’s have a contest,” the Sun said.

Far below, a man was travelling a winding road wearing a warm winter coat.

“As a trial of strength,” said the Sun, “Let’s see which of us can take the coat off of that guy.”

“It is all simple for me to remove his coat,” boasted the Wind.
The Wind blew so hard, the birds held he trees tightly. The world was filled with dust and leaves. But the harder the wind blew down, the tighter the shivering man seized to his coat.
Then, the Sun appeared from behind a cloud. Sun warmed the air and the icy ground. The man on the road unbuttoned his coat.

The sun grew calmly brighter and brighter.

Before long the man felt so hot, he removed his coat and sat under a green try.

“How did you do that?” said the Wind.

“It was easy,” said the Sun, “I lit the day. Through gentleness I got my way.

Get Up

Get Up

Bringing a giraffe into the world is a tall order. A baby giraffe falls 10 feet from its mother's womb and usually lands on its back. Within seconds it rolls over and tucks its legs under its body. From this position it considers the world for the first time and shakes off the last vestiges of the birthing fluid from its eyes and ears. Then the mother giraffe rudely introduces its offspring to the reality of life.
In his book, "A View from the Zoo", Gary Richmond describes how a newborn giraffe learns its first lesson.

The mother giraffe lowers her head long enough to take a quick look. Then she positions herself directly over her calf. She waits for about a minute, and then she does the most unreasonable thing. She swings her long, pendulous leg outward and kicks her baby, so that it is sent sprawling head over heels.
When it doesn't get up, the violent process is repeated over and over again. The struggle to rise is momentous. As the baby calf grows tired, the mother kicks it again to stimulate its efforts. Finally, the calf stands for the first time on its wobbly legs.
Then the mother giraffe does the most remarkable thing. She kicks it off its feet again. Why? She wants it to remember how it got up. In the wild, baby giraffes must be able to get up as quickly as possible to stay with the herd, where there is safety. Lions, hyenas, leopards, and wild hunting dogs all enjoy young giraffes, and they'd get it too, if the mother didn't teach her calf to get up quickly and get with it.
The late Irving Stone understood this. He spent a lifetime studying greatness, writing novelized biographies of such men as Michelangelo, Vincent van Gogh, Sigmund Freud, and Charles Darwin.
Stone was once asked if he had found a thread that runs through the lives of all these exceptional people. He said, "I write about people who sometime in their life have a vision or dream of something that should be accomplished and they go to work.
"They are beaten over the head, knocked down, vilified, and for years they get nowhere. But every time they're knocked down they stand up. You cannot destroy these people. And at the end of their lives they've accomplished some modest part of what they set out to do."

Oceans Meet

"I am the Island of Rameswaram, dear friend,
Born out of the shining water of the Indian Ocean.
O my fellow Island, O my dearest friend,
What is your origin and where do you live?"

"Dear Ramy, they call me Formosa?the beautiful Island,
I live like a beautiful flower seeing the early sun-rise,
Sitting in the gardens of magnificent oceans of the pacific,
As the deepest waves of the noble ocean scatter around me."

"O friend, my dear friend ? Formosa,
I greet you with a heart brimming with joy.
My vast ocean embraces a land of ancient religions, culture and divine wisdom,
It is the soil where enlightened one ? Lord Buddha once walked upon."

"O Ramy! You are indeed showered with blessings divine,
Garlanding around me are nations with billions of human souls,
It was, the land and the nation which I call mine,
That gave birth to the wisest sage, Confucius who shaped human thought in noble roles."

And then the two great humble oceans prayed and prayed,
The two noble sages, then descended like angels upon the Sangam ,
The magnificent oceans then curiously asked the heavenly souls,
To glorify the earth with their wisdom like they did two millennia ago.

The waves of gracious smiles from them merged with peace into each other,
As they waited for the sages to ponder and illuminate with their knowledge.
The mighty oceans sat patiently with clasped watery hands,
As they swell and fell with each stroke of unfailing tide.

And then with the radiant sun shining behind them spreading day,
The sages smiled graciously as they began to say,
Their voice echoed from the horizon filling the anxious sky,
Time froze as the message of human glory and peace expanded to occupy the void.

The wisest sage, Confucius said,
"We are with two oceans who nurture half of humanity,
We came to the planet earth in the same century,
And gave the message of humanity and peace.
O enlightened one! O Lord Buddha,
Can you tell the world, how they can live,
With universal peace and prosperity for all?"

Buddha smiled with serene tranquility,
"God gifted humans with intelligence and the tool of reason,
It is for man to harness the might of the divine gift,
To prosper towards a life of goodness and truth."

The wisest sage, the holy master then agreed,
"O enlightened one! You thoughts are unique,
Humans are indeed entrusted the great mission,
Of realizing with body, mind and soul ? the God?s vision"

Then our Island friends and the oceans which gave them birth,
Humbly joined their voices from the heart,
As they prayed and prayed again,
Beseeching the divines to give a message of human renaissance.

Again a deep silence engulfed the universe,
The cosmos seemed to be filled with energy,
The waves from both the oceans went violently high,
And gently touched the feet of divinity with beautiful shehnai playing:

(O planet, what a past and what a present you possess,
And when they come together, greeting like us two seas,
They create the future, future of peace and prosperity for all)

"O wisest sage, Confucius! You have preached and preached to peasants and herders in Lu,
You preached the value of family life and that of righteousness in the heart,
And O enlightened one! Under the sprawling Bodhi tree,
You proclaimed ? where there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character".

The wise sage then said,
"Yes I will sing now!
When there is beauty in the character,
There is harmony in the home"

The enlightened one, the Buddha added,
"When there is harmony in the home,
There is order in the nation,
When there is order in the nation
There is peace in the world".
In chorus, the two great sages wise and enlightened,
Blessed humanity with the song of life righteousness,
For world peace and prosperity for all.

The Islands and the oceans rejoiced in unison,
The waves and winds joined to sing the song of life in Sri Raga ,
Om Shanti! Om Shanti! then in Chinese He-ping! He-ping!
The song was then done.

1 Formosa : Taiwan
2 Sangam : Confluence of two water bodies
3 Shehnai : an Indian musical instrument often played in auspicious occasions
4 Sri Raga : A Raga in Indian music
5 Om Shanthi : Divine peace for the world in language
6 He-ping : world peace (Chinese)

An Inspirational Lesson

An Inspirational Lesson Learned From Mother Teresa

The incident went something like this:
One day, Mother Teresa was asking a baker for some bread to feed the hungry children in her orphanage. The baker was furious with her request, not only did he turn her down, he spat at her. In response to his outrageous actions, Mother Teresa calmly reached deep into her pocket, took out her handkerchief, wiped the spat off and said “That was for me, now what about some bread for my poor children.” The baker was touched by Mother Teresa’s love and greatness, complied and thereafter provided bread for the children in the orphanage.
How would you have reacted? My first reaction was a mix of anger and humiliation. How could someone ever do something so nasty? Mother Teresa chose to react differently, she knew that if she had not taken the insulting spit in full grace, the poor children at the orphanage would have to go on being hungry.
The lesson that I learned from Mother Teresa:
When guided by one’s purpose, one can choose appropriate reactions to any situation in life. No matter how disagreeing is the circumstance.
I will end this entry with a quote by Mother Teresa which i found from the book “Talent Unleashed”,
“No matter who say what, you should accept it with a smile and do your own work.” ~ Mother Teresa

Talk Less, and Talk Mindfully

Talk Less, and Talk Mindfully

The Power of Silence is beyond expression. It can only be experienced in the inner shrine of our own hearts when the heart opens to the Universal Presence of the Divine and sings the melody of soundless sound that is called Anahat Naad, unstuck sound, in Yoga philosophy.
When we talk unnecessarily, which most of us do frequently, we waste a lot of our energy. Instead, when we speak sparingly, sharing only our best thoughts, we start conserving our energy that transmutes itself into the Power of Silence and spiritual powers. To those who seek peace and happiness as they practice meditation and prayerfulness, the desire to talk and talk and talk, in a vain attempt to prove one’s own existence, becomes less and less important.
If you do not waste your time in passing your judgment and making comments about others in the world, you are creating yourself less bad karma. As you practice, your need to talk lessens, and as a result, you become introspective and vigilant about your inner thoughts. As you non-judgmentally keep watching your thoughts, contemplating the higher values of life, a state of silence descends on your mind and that quietude, and its beatitude, surrounds you. In that meditative state, your body and mind are healed beyond comprehension.
However, most people are habitual talkers; they would find controlling their mind for peaceful meditation an insurmountable task. The moment their mind is externalized, they start chasing the desires of the mind, become judgmental of themselves and others, and fall from the state of silence. A restless, chattering mind can never pray nor can it hear the voice of Silence. It is said when your mind is calm you can listen to the Word of God. Remember the goal is to talk less, and carefully choose the words you need. Thereby you will conserve a lot of energy which will help you to calm your mind and enter the Golden Shrine of Silence.
All techniques of meditation and prayer are basically training for your mind to be quiet, to be silent so that you can hear the voice of God. A Meditative Mind is the mind that is ever absorbed in the Mind Essence. It is responsive and not reactive. It is compassionate and loving, ever flowing from inside out, ever in bliss, being established in the Blissful Being.
When the mind that chatters all the time is focused on something that gradually calms it and brings it to its inner, purer, more sublime essence, it levitates into spheres of Higher Light that are the essence of Pure Mind. When the mind stops its waving, rippling, it settles down, thought ceases, and quiet serenity descends.
Practice meditation and prayerfulness, meditate upon your Self, pray with all surrender and you will realize that state of Silence. From the subtlest to the most intense sound, all are emanations from the one Divine source which the Hindus call as Brahman. The words you utter come from the same source, that’s the reason you have to be very cautious while speaking words. Words have infinite power for they are manifest shabda (Sanskrit for speech or voice) Brahman. When you talk less, your few carefully chosen words will bring blessedness to the world and will bring you ever closer in worship to Brahman, or God.
Therefore, your first goal is outer Silence, and then inner Silence. As you stop unnecessary words, and unwanted thoughts, you will experience this benediction of Silence. God is kind and ever available to anyone who wants to reach out to Him/Her while going through the mundane life on earth. Blessed are they who have tested the nectar of Divine Silence, which is the only way to hear the footsteps of God in the shrine of our hearts.
