3 Delicious and Healthy Low Calorie Snacks
South Indian Low Calorie Food
Idli:
In southern parts of India, in states like Kerala, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Andhra idli, dosa and utthappam are very popular. Despite being very tasty when served with chatni and sambar, these dishes are low in calories, high in nutrients and fiber and can be part of heart-healthy weight loss diet. Dosa is a batter and idli is a boiled cake prepared from overnight fermented paste made by grinding a mixture of split black gram (daal) and rice.
One idli has 60 to 70 calories and a plain dosa has 100 calories, whereas they both are rich in nutrients. Serving 2 to 4 idlis or 1 to 2 dosas can be sufficient to fulfill an average person ’s hunger. Sambar is a delicious Indian curry served alongside dosa and idli. It is very tasty and the taste varies from one state to another. Sambar is a low calorie curry made from split red gram (daal), spices, and pieces of various vegetables like drumstick, pumpkin etc.
Chapati:
It is also called roti. This delicious flat bread made from wheat flour has most of the nutrients in whole wheat dough. Compared to noodles or white bread, chapati is highly nutritious and healthy for weight watchers, diabetics and those suffering from heart disease. 1 chapati has only 80 to 110 calories depending on size, but it has 3.5 grams of protein, half a gram of total fat, no saturated or trans fat, no cholesterol, but it has vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, calcium, iron and fiber.
Daal and Daal Fry:
This lentil and legume preparation is like a curry. If we look at the nutrition facts, we shall realize how nutritious and low calorie this humble but wonderful1 dish is! 1 bowl (100 to 120 grams or 3.5 to 4 oz.) of daal has only 117 calories, total fat only 1.7 grams, no saturated fat, carbs 19.1 grams, protein 7 grams, no cholesterol, calcium 27 mg, iron 1.8 mg, fiber 1.7 grams etc.
I have given only two examples of Indian food articles in order to emphasize its richness in nutrients and leanness in terms of fat and calories.
The reason why traditional Indian diet is so healthy is that unlike other diets, minimum processing and refining is done to it. Whatever small amounts of nutrients are lost in cooking are negligible compared to other highly processed and packaged foods.

Oats Idly or Idly
The other day I prepared Oats Idli. I was very happy when it came out very well – soft, tasty and filling. In fact, it tasted almost like Rava Idly and hence, I feel if you do like Rava Idly, you will like Oats Idli. It should help make a good breakfast for your family. So, why Oats Idli on breakfast menu?
Idli are well known and well received, healthy, nutrition rich food. The Black Gram lentil or Urad Dal is protein rich and Idli itself is spice and oil-free. Doctors recommend going for Idli as an easily digestible healthy food during illness. Oats are known to heart friendly and rich in dietary fiber. The soluble fiber found in Oats is known to lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol levels. Oats are also known to aid weight loss, reduce blood pressure, increase energy levels. So, when these two healthy foods come together, I can only imagine things turning out to be good (although, lentils are left out in Oats Idli but some of the protein content of lentils missing is compensated by its presence in Oats. Protein content in Oats is known to be higher than those in other cereals).
The other advantage with Oats Idli is that its preparation time is lot lower than normal Idli. No need to soak Dal or lentils for hours, prepare batter and then leave it to ferment overnight for 12 hours. Hence, like Rava Idli, Oats is instant preparation and hence the term Instant Oats Idli.
After my Oats Breakfast recipe became the most popular recipe on my blog, readers have been asking me for more Oats recipes. Hence, after Oats Upma, Oats Soup, now I am posting Oats Idli. I found its recipe in Sharmilee’s recipes blog. I admire her work a lot and do check out her post too for some step by step instructions on how to make Oats Idli. I made some small changes here – instead of Wheat Rava, I used normal white or medium sized Rava and used Green Chilli paste. Also, Instead of using Curd + Water, I used Buttermilk. We usually prepare Buttermilk at home daily, so I used sour Buttermilk. I added the Coriander Leaves to the batter directly without frying. It really came out well and my relatives who tried it out based on my instructions found equal success with it. Do try it out and let me know if you like it or post questions if you have issues.
Please update your comment if you like this aritcle :)
